The crowds have been lower but not as much as everyone thought due to the great snow conditions (in the Northeast at least). The resorts ARE losing money though. The only reason the crowds haven’t dropped besides the snow is the deals the resorts are offering to get people up to the mountain. Rental prices have plummeted and lift ticket deals are pretty easy to come by. I’d recommend getting to mountain if you have any extra cash. You’ll get a great deal and enjoy the terrific season.
one of my local resorts have had record breaking days this year that you wouldnt think would be. whats hurting is the support people…. lodging, restaurants and such.
I was in Jackson Hole a few weeks ago. Some hotel folk I spoke to said that bookings were down about 30% for the year. Jackson is a destination resort. Local hills may be doing better because people are putting off the big spend for destination resorts, and skiing locally.
Our GM told me a few weeks ago that we were actually OVER our fall projections. We are a very small community oriented hill in the Poconos. Most of our skiers and riders are season pass holders and property owners from the community who automatically get a season pass, however we have had a lot of daily ticket sales. Weekends have been great and our snow has been excellent. I patrol usually 3 nights a week and only once have we had boilerplate snow. We sold out of season rentals, and learn-to-ski packages have been selling well.
We’re not a destination resort, but we partner with a local family oriented hotel resort and usually get a lot of business from them. That too has been steady.
