SkiOli asked:
I am an accomplished alpine skiier, and i was wondering how long it typically takes for someone who knows how to ski well to pick up telemarking.

Well, I am also a dedicated skier (30 years). Telemarking is extremely difficult for me, but I have friends who picked it up pretty quick. If you throw away your alpine skis and only work on your tele turn, you should be ok.
The problem is, tele turns use a completely opposite motion from skiing. I can manage the groomers, but anything in crud throws me.
I would suggest getting a lesson, pick up tips from friends that tele, or at the very least read a book on tips and how-to. There are a lot of little verbal cues you can use as you tele to remind yourself how to go through the motions.
From what I’ve heard, telemarking is harder on the muscles but easier on the joints. So it might take a while but I wish you luck!
