Jas asked:

Hi,
We are planning to travel to Queenstown in late July.We got a quote from our agent and the price for hiring and buy passes was very high! I would like a locals opinion on wether to hire our ski equipment such as skis/boots etc and buy our lift passes and transport when we get to Queenstown? Will it be cheaper? Thanks for everyones help and if you guys have any other tips, that would be great!! Cheers, Jas.

My dad has fit ski boots for years in the winters here, and he constantly tells me about the people who hire their equipment off the mountain and then once they get there, and start using it properly, their boots don’t fit properly, or they’d rather have longer or shorter skis. Unless the company you hire from also has a franchise at the location you will be skiing, you will be stuck with equipment you decide you don’t like.

Dad has seen a lot of people who have ended up renting ski equipment again from where he worked, so it ends up a much more costly exercise in the long run.

Buying your passes is one thing – get them wherever they are cheapest, but definitely play safe and rent your equipment in Queenstown.

Google the skifield in particular or Queenstown in general, because it was announced in today’s paper that they are being auctioned on line.

It depends. Where are you coming from? If you’re flying down from somewhere in the North Island I wouldn’t say hire it in Qtown. If you’re driving from Dunedin or CHCH I would say hire before you go. I’d imagine it would be more expensive in Queenstown because they’d be able to charge overseas tourists a lot. Have a look in R&R or if you’re from Dunedin and a staff or student at Otago Uni, their rec center is really good. When my Mum worked at the Uni she hired stuff from their for my little brother. =]
