Ski resorts with other activities/places around?

ski resorts
Horse Jumper asked:

I am going on a ski trip this winter, and I am looking for a place in North America that offers good skiing, yet has other activities close by. We are planning on skiing for a day, leaving the resort and doing non-skiing activities for a day (museums, sight-seeing, historical sights, etc.), then skiing again.

I went to Solitude Ski in Utah, which was PERFECT for skiing (not crowded/tourist-y), but really had nothing else to do in the city that it was closest to.

Any recommendations?

Take your choice of most of the western resorts. I prefer Whistler/Blackcomb for the terrain and the nightlife, also the Winter Olympics will be held in Vancouver about 70 miles away. Many of the Alpine events will be at Whistler. Another choice is the granddaddy of all north american resorts, Sun Valley. Aspen, Vail, are others, maybe Tahoe near the gambling state of Nevada.

well if you’re there mainly for the skiing, then i would go to Whistler blackcomb, though it is very expensive, especially with the winter van olympics comming along. however, it has a lot. At night time, there’s tubing. and ever sunday night, there’s this “Fire and Ice” show, which is amazing! i went and saw it, and there are all of these skiers and snowboarders doing tricks through rings of fire and stuff. awesome. and then horse-drawn sleigh rides. zip treks eco tours.
no yea you might want to check out their website at:

Whistler is just increadible; it has the best of both worlds; amazing skiing and boarding on the tallest skiable peak in north america, as well as other activities, and you don’t drive to get to them, they’re all on the mountain, and somehow mountain-related.

Mt tremblant is also great, my favourite. the energy of the village is really awesome, and it offers roughly the same apres ski activities as whistler blackcomb. i’ve been there so many times, it’s like home to me.

    i hope i helped!

Actually, go back to Utah but stay in Salt Lake City this time. Solitude is 35 minutes from downtown SLC and so are most other amazing resorts like Snowbird, Alta, Brighton, etc. On your non-skiing day enjoy the city, its museums, its shopping, go visit the great salt lake, go for a hike in the deserts, etc. You’ll have tons of snow in the mountains guaranteed and you’ll be wearing sneakers in town with a little bit of luck. If you go in early March, you’ll even be wearing shorts in the city most likely.
