My cousin was ski patrol and avalanche control at Big Sky in Montana, and during the summers, he was a smoke jumper with the forest service. He would parachute out of an airplane to fight forest fires all over the western US and Alaska

I know a bunch of patrolers and they do anything that they can to make it. I know they are bartenders, carpenters, just about anything.

Work other jobs. Ski patrol doesn’t pay all that well and you need a bit of supplemental cash to support yourself through the winter months.

Pros usually have a summer job. Several of my pro friends work as river guides or mountain guides. A few I know are wildfire firefighters. Others just have painting or contractor jobs.

Volunteer patrollers, like me, usually have a full-time year-round job.

They might go to other countries and work there as a ski patroller.
Then in that country’s summer they come back here and work.
