So, if you are in the Lake Tahoe area this Friday August 15 plan to head over to Squaw Valley USA. Professional astronomers Paul and Gigi Giles will bring a variety of high-powered telescopes to High Camp.

Squaw Valley USA’s high elevation and pollution-free skies create an excellent opportunity to view not only the Perseid Meteor Shower, but also constellations, planets, satellites, galaxies, nebula, star clusters, and other heavenly wonders not seen with the ***** eye.

The telescopes are available beginning at dusk and guests may take turns looking through the telescopes. All ages are welcome and no reservations are needed.

Stargazing is free with a Cable Car ticket. After 5 pm Cable Car tickets are $12 for adults, youth & seniors and $5 for children.

    Best regards

Most Resorts Groom and Make snow at night. The big machines you saw could have the groomers, which smooth out the snow and puts those lines in it. They are like big snowcats with headlights on them.
They also could have been the snow guns/cannons/blowers. If it were these you would have seen big clouds of snow being blown over the mountain from them. When it’s not naturally snowing the resorts make snow to get a deeper base. It’s done by watter, cold air, and high pressure being put on these two elements.

Basically, at night they make the resorts better for the next day.

Resorts use Snowcats to groom the slopes, it keeps the snow in good condition. They do it at night because there is no signs up, lift corals, and people skiing.

They would be grading the runs, and also making sure that the hills are stabilized from avalanches etc. so that it makes it safe for the skiers during the day.
