What is the best of the smaller ski resorts in Lake Tahoe, CA area?

ski resorts
SourKumquats asked:

I am looking to go to one of the smaller, less crowded ski resorts in the lake tahoe area. I am trying to avoid the larger ski resorts, ie Northstar, Heaveanly. Preferably it would have good ski classes and a good selection of runs. I am a intermediate to advanced skier but will be going with other less experienced people. Any recommendations or comments?

I love Northstar myself. The back runs are long and awesome.
I have never skied Mt. Rose but have heard it is a great mountain.

My choice would be Sugar Bowl, especially if you live to the North of Tahoe. Excellent snow record, and some terrific intermediate runs on Mount Judah. The new condos at Sugar Bowl village look great as well.

I loved Kirkwood, but not sure how their classes are. It’s also fairly advanced terrain, although a couple of the people I was with were intermediate and they had fun.

I found the crowds at Heavenly and Squaw valley were not bad even though both are big resorts. And the skiing was fantastic. It was really cool to ski from Nevada to California at Heavenly – with the “Welcome to California” sign at the side of the run.
