What is the best ski resort in the Lake Tahoe area and why?

ski
KOTS asked:

I want to go skiing in January or February in the Lake Tahoe area with a total of four people. I want to be able to ski all day and then go out at night. What area would be best for this? Also, some of the people going with are beginner skiers.

Northstar is my favorite resort ever and it happens to be in lake tahoe :)
they have amazing runs for all types of skiiers and snowboarders
they have a STARBUCKS in the village, and an ice skating rink, with stores, fire pits to sit by, they have it all
and their are great places to go out at night near here

Easy. Kirkwood. Its about 30 mins south of Tahoe. It has extremely challenging terrain (a large majority of the mountain is black and double black), and a wide variety too: bowls, trees, moguls, cornices, chutes, and all kinds of fun stuff. To give you an idea of the difficulty level, this was where Glenn Plake busted his femur back in his heyday, and a number of extreme skiers have died jumping cliffs on the back side of the mountain. Plus, the crowds are smaller than other resorts right on the lake, and the crowds that are there tend to be a better skier than you’d find someplace like Heavenly.

The second best resort is Squaw Valley. The problem there isn’t the terrain – its the ski patrol. They clamp down pretty hard on skiing fast and jumping. They’ve had too many lawsuits over the years and now routinely err on the side of caution by making you slow down.

I would suggest Heavenly. It has easier runs for beginners and is right nest to town. As a matter of fact there is a chair lift right in town that takes you to the mountain.

I like Heavenly. It has a whole bunch of varied terrain and is HUGE. I have a great time skiing from Nevada to California, taking the gondola down for lunch, and then skiing back to Nevada.

    Fun!
